'Most of it has conservation area status, and it is characterised by substantial Regency, Victorian and Edwardian properties often set in large gardens, and by well-proportioned terraces. Markwick Gardens and St Leonards Gardens along with the wide roads in the northern part of the area maintain a feeling of spaciousness, which contrast with the narrow roads of the picturesquely designed townscape further south
