Proposed Alternative Objective,
Objective 8 - Protect Countryside and Greenfield Sites

Prioritise the use of previously developed land, protect the town's green fringe and promote compact mixed-use development. Ensure new development makes use of existing infrastructure and maximises the use of renewable energy. Critical success factors are:
* 90% of all new development to be on brownfield sites
* no greenfield development prior to 2020
* encourage reuse of buildings and restrict unnecessary demolition
* find appropriate uses to retain and restore the Observer Building by 2011
* restrict any residential development that is not within reach of existing transport and community infrastructure
