What do we want to do?
We want to make sure that as Hastings grows, it does so in a way that protects our valuable natural and built heritage assets. This includes the distinctive landscapes and ecosystems in the borough, as well as the 900 or so listed buildings, 18 conservation areas and 2 registered parks. The Plan will support the restoration and reuse of our historic buildings to maintain them for generations to come, as well as making sure that new development improves the town’s parks, coast and countryside, including those areas with trees and woodland.
How will we do this?
- Strategic Policy 7 (SP7): Protecting and Enhancing the Historic Environment: Sets out the council’s approach to ensuring development sits well alongside local built heritage.
- Strategic Policy 8 (SP8): Conserving and Enhancing the Natural Environment: Sets out expectations for developers around protecting important species, habitat and landscapes.
Development Management policies supporting SP7 and SP8 are:
- Policy SC5: Proposals Affecting the Significance and Setting of Heritage Assets: Sets out clear design expectations for development that may affect the significance or setting of heritage asset.
- Policy SC6: Sustainable Development and Heritage Protection: Sets out guidance on retrofitting heritage properties.
- Policy SC7: Changes to building elevations and roofs in Conservation Areas: Sets out detailed design guidance for development in conservation areas.
