If this is to be achieved, we should limit the number of supermarkets and national chains in or near these centres. There are too many fast food outlets in Silverhill and not enough local shops. Kings Road, London Road and Norman Road have a wonderful variety of local shops and these should be supported.

As the loss of the Post Office in Bohemia has demonstrated, it is vital that secondary shopping areas maintain not only the core services named in this Objective, but also a healthy variety of independently owned local businesses.

This Objective should also cover the secondary retail areas of White Rock, Trinity Triangle and Queens Road, all of which remain distinct from the core town centre area.

Representation Summary:

Objective 6 is overly prescriptive in describing the specific uses that should occur in local shopping areas and does not allow the flexibility for future development proposals to be assessed on their own merits.
